Transition from Picture Books to Chapter Books

Whether you choose new books or pre-owned (gently-used children's books), it's a good practice to encourage kids of 6 years and over to read books (that they enjoyed when younger) on their own. Choose large-font books that are simple to read and gradually you can increase the difficulty level of reading. Your child can seek assistance for unfamiliar words. You can try ‘First Reader’, ‘Early Readers’ or ‘I Can Read’ books, which work well to help your child read longer text. As your child gains reading confidence, he/she will gently transition to chapter books (with fewer illustrations).

Motivate your child to choose books on his/her own. Children of this age may choose ‘Horrid Henry’, ‘Geronimo Stilton’, Captain Underpants, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries or Roald Dahl books. You can look into buying gently-used books available in India, which are abridged versions of classic stories. Help your kid choose an engaging book series that will be fun to read.
